Our Resource Center is open for lending, browsing and research in the broader area of sustainable food systems as well as in our specific focus on gardening with youth. The Resource Center supports our School-Community Garden project through its collection of curricular materials that includes environmental studies, school gardening/agriculture, and nutrition; it also supports our belief in educating members and the general public with a more general collection of books, reports, files, reference material and videos.
Most of the collection is in print, with some videos of archival significance. We acquire material in the following areas: Organic gardening & farming; food safety; biotechnology/genetically engineered organisms; CSA (Community Supported Agriculture); the ethics of food/eating; community food security; cooperatives (food, farmer, consumer); local food; marketing produce, herbs & flowers; and other issues related to our belief in developing a sustainable, locally based food system.
We especially invite our members, teachers, parents & students to use our material; we welcome students doing research on the development of sustainable food systems - our collection on the history of CSA's, food policy and the organic food movement is unique in this region, and contains over three decades worth of seminal papers. We are not comprehensive, but we have a broad collection.
Hours: Vary, but usually Mondays through Thursdays, from 10AM to 6PM. We open earlier and stay later, if possible, to accomodate users, especially teachers.
Location: Rooms 315-316 on the third floor of the Downtown Presbyterian Church, 121 N. Fitzhugh St., Rochester, NY 14614, 585-232-1463.
